What is variable data printing?

VDP, or Variable Data Printing, is a dynamic printing technique that allows us to tailor mail pieces to the recipient within the same print run. Letters and mailers can be customized with variable data like a custom greeting, an address, the recipient’s name, organization name, or even specific information like donation amounts or event dates that correspond to the mailing.

Benefits of Using Variable Data Printing

  • Give a personal touch to your printed piece, which can make the recipient feel more connected to your campaign.
  • Personalizing print media will typically have higher response rates than a generic piece because personalized content is more relevant to the recipient.
  • Targeting specific individuals with unique messages can achieve better results with smaller, more targeted print runs. VDP may be a higher cost than standard printing, but it can be more cost-effective in the long run.

Successful Variable Data Campaigns

There are many ways in which your business can use Variable Data Printing in direct mail campaigns. Here are some successful strategies that we implement for our clients:

  • Send a non-profit appeal letter with a tiered variable donation or gift ladder based on the recipient’s previous gift amount.
    • Animal Sanctuaries
    • Education Organizations & School Districts
    • Environmental Groups
    • Human Rights & Social Activism
  • VDP on direct mail can help a sales team match the sales/customer service representative assigned to the account by printing a variable picture or contact information of the sales rep. Great for sales teams in:
    • Real Estate
    • Auto Dealerships
    • Equipment Providers
    • Home Services
  • Use variable data printing to tell the customer details of their last service or when it’s time to schedule a new appointment:
    • Dental or Medical Offices
    • Landscaping Businesses
    • Home Services
    • Automotive Maintenance (list the make and model of their car or the date of an upcoming service)
  • Let neighbors in the area know where your store is located by printing the address or show a map of the office location closest to their address:
    • Retail Stores
    • Clothing & Apparel Shops
    • Restaurants & Food Establishments

QR Code Mail Tracking

Imprinting unique Variable QR Codes on your mail piece for each recipient can help supply data on recipients interacting with your mail campaign. Once the QR Code is scanned, you will receive an email notification and data about which recipient engaged with your mail piece.

Know Who Is Interested

By printing variable QR codes on your mailer, you'll be able to see who is truly interested in your mailer or campaign when they scan it. Using our Mail Tracking dashboard, you can then run a more targeted outreach campaign with a follow-up mailer or a simple phone call to engage with the interested recipient.

Variable Map Printing

Printing Variable Maps on your mailer can help recipients find your business location closest to them. Maps tailored to the recipient's address are more relevant to their location, keeping your business location in mind as they navigate their typical driving routes.

Location, Location, Location

Variable Map Printing is good for new businesses opening in the area, businesses reaching out to new residents who have moved into the neighborhood ('Welcome to the Neighborhood' postcards), real estate professionals for open houses, political mail to show nearest polling or ballet drop-off locations, and so much more.
